For more than a decade, James Packer’s private fitness retreat has been closed to the public, hosting media and entertainment royalty in discrete and luxurious surrounds.
But the legendary Fifty Four Park St is opening its membership to mere mortals, with 100 coveted spots up for grabs, Fairfax Media reports.

Located in the basement of the Packer media empire’s former HQ at 170 Castlereagh St, the opulent health club and day spa has welcomed guests including Tom Cruise, Cate Blanchett, Naomi Watts, Russell Crowe, Pink, Crown Prince Frederik, the Olsen twins, Sarah Murdoch and the cast of The Great Gatsby.
Its memberships have until now been restricted to staff of Bauer Media, which bought out Packer’s ACP magazine stable in 2012, and the casino mogul’s Consolidated Press Holdings.
The luxury gym, pool, sauna and day spa opened its doors at the end of 2005 after extensive renovations following the death of Kerry Packer in what was previously the Hyde Park Club, run by the elder Packer’s mistress Julie Trethowan.

One former staffer reminisced about the “five star experience”, which made returning to a more ordinary corporate gym a shock to the senses.
“It was like being at a country club in the United States,” she said.

Cleverly laid out with the swimming pool serving as the centrepiece, Fifty Four Park St features discrete workout zones with dedicated weights, spin, yoga, pilates and cardio studios, plus a glassed-off VIP section for senior execs like Peta Credlin, Mark Arbib and Karl Bitar.
